Importance of Community in Motherhood: Lessons Learned From a Gorilla

One of my favorite stories about the importance of community and support is about a captive born gorilla.

Having been fed by handlers and not having seen any newborn gorillas feed any other way she struggled to feed her own baby.

This is important! Up until this point, it was assumed that mammals knew how to nourish their young with their bodies from instinct.

The zoo asked for nursing individuals to feed their babies in-view of the post-gravid gorilla to see if it would help her feed her own baby.

It worked! This showed the importance of community when it comes to nursing.

Even if you grew up around nursing babies, prenatal classes are important. If you haven’t been around many nursing babies and plan to nurse your baby, taking a class is imperative.
