Baby’s First Bath At Home: And What It Taught Me

STORY TIME: Baby’s First Bath at Home

When I had my first baby I was a night nursery nurse at a small hospital. It was night shift’s job to bathe and weigh the babies. With practice multiple shifts a week I became quite efficient at bathing babies and washing their hair and could even change out crib linens with one hand while holding the freshly bathed and swaddled baby in the other. I had a pretty good system in place.

I felt beyond prepared to bring home my newborn. I mean, I taught the newborn class for crying out loud. Even after a c-section, “I’ve got this” was my attitude.

After getting settled at home, it was time to give my baby a bath. Well, after a c/s neither standing nor bending were options, so after a brief moment of panic I realized I had to figure out another way to get my baby bathed. My normal method of quickly bathing babies wouldn’t work in this situation. I would have to figure something else out.

So I hopped in an empty tub in my yoga pants and a T-shirt and bathed my baby on a bath sling in a similar way I bathed all of the babies at work but it allowed me to remain seated and without having to stretch and reach too much.

I figured out what worked for me but it was a reality check that I still had a lot to learn about having my own baby at home.
